Registration of trapped muskrats and coypus is essential to monitor the population and the effectiveness of eradication campaigns. Both the Netherlands and Flanders have set up a registration system for monitoring trapped muskrats and coypus. Data from these applications, together with data from a new application in Germany will be consolidated in one place. This dataset will be made accessible in a purposely build dashboard.

Registration of trapped muskrats and coypus is essential to monitor the population and the effectiveness of eradication campaigns. Data of sightings and tracks of both species can be used to increase local trapping effort. It can be also used for the identification of sites where to implement the innovative methods developed in this project. Apart from the target species, it is also important to include observations of non-target species to minimize bycatches in the future.

Registration systems

Both the Netherlands and Flanders have already set up a registration system for monitoring trapped muskrats and coypus. These systems consist of a smartphone application for recording trapping data. A database structure is linked to the app where all data is gathered in a standardized way. Additionally, both regions also have a platform where individual observations are registered: waarnemingen.be and waarnemingen.nl.

The application source code of Flanders is shared with the partners in Germany to facilitate monitoring of catches and observations. German trappers and hunters are trained to use this new application in a correct way.

All data in one dashboard

The data of the Dutch, Flemish and German application will be gathered in one database. This dataset is accessible via a dashboard specially made for this project. The dashboard displays clearly all observations. In this way, it ensures clear visualization of the catch data of all partners.
